Profiles of the more "unknown" justices of the U.S. SupremeCourt, examining their contemporary import to the Court andthe legal culture, as well as the various reasons for theirsubsequent obscurity. Major factors contributing to theobscurity and, often, negativity towards certain justicesinclude: the fact that their holdings in the context oftoday's legal culture are politically incorrect;private law cases made up much of their docket; andsome significant contributions to the Court were made inways less tangible than opinion writing. Also, some justicesare obscure and held in low esteem because they trulysuffered from flamboyant ineptitude. Regardless, eachjustice is worthy of study to fully understand the SupremeCourt as an institution, including the evolution of the lawwithin its jurisdiction.
