This volume was the last published work of the distinguishedauthor. He died one month after completing the Preface tothe work in December 1921. The work contains the eightlectures delivered by him before the Institute of Politicsat Williamstown, Mass. in the summer of 1921. In thepreface, Bryce said the work was intended to answer thequestions centering on international unrest by "throwingupon them the light of history. It is history which,recording the events and explaining the influences thathave molded the minds of men, shows us how the world ofinternational politics has come to be what it is."
