This work was the first general encyclopedia to emphasizescience, serving as a model for Ephraim Chambers'Cyclopaedia. It was named by Denis Diderot in his Prospectusof 1950 as a source for the great Encyclopedie. Harris livedduring one of the most important periods of scientificadvancement. He was able to recognize originality in othersand draw on their works in his lexicon.
