The text provides the coverage of the scandalous 1821 trialof James Prescott, a Middlesex County judge of Probate andWills who appeared before the Senate of Massachusetts oncharges of "misconduct and maladministration." OriginallyPickering and Gardiner intended to provide serial accountsof the trial to the Boston Daily Advertiser, whichultimately published it. Once the trial began, the writers, who were also both attorneys, decided to publish the fullreport instead. "The arguments of the counsel will be foundto contain much valuable information on the subjects ofimpeachment and courts of probate, and the appendix, if itdoes not supersede the necessity of sometimes recurring tothe journals of the Legislature for the records of formerimpeachments, will at least serve as an index to them." -Preface
