Holdsworth, William Searle

Sir William Holdsworth was one of the most distinguishedhistorians of English common law. He wrote this book toprovide students of real property with a concise history ofthe field. This knowledge was necessary, he believed,because contemporary land law was difficult to understandwithout an understanding of its roots. FortunatelyHoldsworth took on the task. Fifoot commends this book inhis English Law and its Background for its history of therules against perpetuities (121). The Law Quarterly Reviewnoted that "every beginner will certainly have to read thisbook before he reads anything else" (44:105).
