Abortion in the United States: A Compilation of Federal and State Laws, 2nd Edition Reviewed in Law Library Journal

AALL, Constitutional Law, Documentary History of the Legal Aspects of Abortion in the U.S., Family Law, Librarianship, State Law jstanley

Abortion in the United States: A Compilation of Federal and State Laws, 2nd ed.  by Tobe Liebert was recently reviewed by Sara Sampson in Law Library Journal!

Sampson writes: “This set provides a snapshot of the full text of all state (including the District of Columbia) abortion laws as they currently exist and some historical federal statutes. This includes the federal Hyde Amendment in its original (1976) and current (2011) forms. This is particularly helpful because, as provisions of appropriation acts, they do not appear in the U.S. Code. It also includes the vetoed Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act of 1995. While this compilation is convenient for today’s users, it may be invaluable to future scholars.

The Librarian’s Copyright Companion, 2nd Edition by James S. Heller, Paul Hellyer and Benjamin J. Keele was reviewed on the AALL Spectrum Blog today! Reviewer Andrea Alexander recommends the title to both copyright novices and those who are experts in the subject.

Alexander writes “This book, an update of 2004’s first edition, was authored by three academic law librarians, all of whom hold both law and library degrees.  Each of the eight chapters from the first edition has been updated, and a ninth chapter on the library as publisher has been added.  There are also sixteen appendices that range from suggested online copyright resources to model policies to selected provisions from Title 17 of the USC.

The Andrews Award Subcommittee has selected Douglas Lind’s Lincoln’s Suspension of Habeas Corpus: The Pamphlet Literature and Congressional Debate as the recipient of the 2013 AALL Joseph L.  Andrews Bibliographical Award!

Until now, there was no single source which contains a comprehensive collection of contemporary pamphlets addressing Lincoln’s suspension of habeas corpus. The intent of this work is to identify, record, and disentangle pamphlet literature so that it can be read in a framework which allows for a better understanding of the wartime constitutional discourse about Lincoln’s suspension of habeas corpus. Because seemingly minor events take on a greater meaning when placed in the context of larger decisions, it was decided not to selectively reprint titles,
